Identification of the concept you will talk about
I am going to talk about how the power distance index can change the rules and regulations of a country.
A reminder of what the concept means (in your own words)
As a culture becomes larger in population, the level of the country on the power distance index increases.
Therefore, in most cases, cultures with a large population have a high power distance index score. The text produces one theory of why this occurs. When the size of a group becomes larger (including larger classrooms, larger governments, and larger organizations), the group becomes awkward and increasingly unmanageable using an informal system. Most of the time if the population becomes increasingly unmanageable using informal relationships the culture will change to using official procedures including political hierarchies, rules, regulations and formalities to create a stable culture or country.
Why the concept is noteworthy to you
It seems like as a population grows people have to increasing give up some of their rights to be managed by an official system.
An example of the concept in your own experience.
National security matters public access to info
one thing that people give up by living in a large country such as the United States is the freedom to spread information as widely as they would like to.
Ch 5
Identification of the concept you will talk about
I am going to talk about Social expectations- men and women
A reminder of what the concept means (in your own words)
There are certain social expectations that men and women are supposed to follow
Women
Attractive: look pretty or sexy so old, homely, or fat women are usually devalued
Deferential
Unassertive
Emotional
Nurturing
Concerned with people and relationships
Men
Strong
Unemotional
Aggressive
Brave
Successful
Wealthy
Why the concept is noteworthy to you
Some of these expectations can be detrimental to our health. For ex,
Both men and women should be assertive in order to get their emotional and physical needs met
When women are expected to be deferential this makes it harder for them to realize that they are in unhealthy relationships or situations and makes it harder for them to feel like they have a right to get out of these unhealthy relationships or situations and/or speak up to change these unhealthy relationships/situations into more healthy relationships/situations
Women who are old can have valuable advice and wisdom so that people don’t have to learn things the hard way or can learn a new perspective yet these people are usually devalued
When women are expected to be concerned with people and relationships and be nurturing it makes it hard for them to establish the right to take time to take care of themselves
An example of the concept in your own experience.
For example, I feel like as a women in my family I am expected to visit my family every time that I am not working or in school so every Christmas break, Thanksgiving break, Spring Break, for at least a week during the summer, etc. I feel like the time that I spend with other people and in my relationships is more valued by other people than time spent keeping my myself physically, mentally and emotionally healthy.
Identification of the concept you will talk about
I am going to talk about
Facial Expressions Surprise posture surprise
A reminder of what the concept means (in your own words)
Face
Eyes Rapid opening of the eyes
EYEBROWS raising of eyebrows
Mouth opens rapidly, jaw drops, teeth about an inch apart
all of these appearing is relatively rare what is most common is just slight raising of the eyebrows
Posture
Backward head and torso leans
Straight forehead with raised arms
Why the concept is noteworthy to you
I agree with the book except the straight forehead with raised arm posture.
An example of the concept in your own experience.
Since I am not the kind of person that usually focuses on figuring out peoples facial expressions, (although I want to do that more often which is one reason why I wanted to take this class) I have never really noticed any of the behaviors except the raising of the eyebrows and I definitely have not noticed the posture of the straight forehead with raised arms
